Eligibility: Staff and Faculty working at least 30 hours per week are eligible for benefits.

Newly hired or Newly Eligible Employees: Eligible employees may enroll for benefit coverage during the first 31 days from their date of hire, or the date they first become eligible for benefits. Coverage is generally effective the first of the month following or coinciding with the first date of employment or eligibility.

Benefits Insurances Summary

The University offers a choice of three medical insurance plans. Choose between in-network and out-of-network service providers. Costs will traditionally be lower when you visit an in-network provider, which can be found within the .

  • Core PPO Plan
  • Enhanced PPO Plan
  • High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP) with Health Savings Account (HSA)

Virtual Visits

BCBS can provide you and your covered dependents access to care for non-emergency medical issues through MDLive.  Access a board-certified MDLive physician 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year through MDLive’s national contracted network available by online video, mobile app, or phone. MDLive’s doctors can typically diagnose, treat and write prescriptions for many non-emergency health issues. Visit for more information.

Dental

The Dental Plan pays benefits for cleanings, exams and dental procedures as well as orthodontia for adults and children. You may use any licensed dentist, but you can save money by using dentists who are part of the MetLife Dental Network.  Find a list of MetLife Dental Network dental providers at or download the MetLife mobile app - Benefit Tools, for Apple and Android devices. ID cards are available online via MyBenefits or the MetLife Mobile App to download and print at your convenience. MetLife providers can verify benefits electronically, an insurance card is not required. Providers can verify coverage by contacting MetLife’s Dental Customer Service at 1-800-275-4638. on myHilltop.

Vision

The Met Life/Superior Vision Network (SVN) Vision Plan (Policy #5386431) provides benefits for vision care, including eye exams, eyeglasses and contact lenses. In addition, discounts on laser correction surgery are offered. Benefits are offered through Met Life using VSN, which has a large network of providers, including retail centers such as Walt-Mart, Costco Optical, Visionworks, Eye Masters and Sam’s Club. You may use any provider, but services performed by VSP Choice Network providers offer the greatest value. Met Life/SVN does not issue ID cards. Once enrolled, simply tell your SVN doctor you’re a member and they will handle the rest. If you visit an in-network doctor for services and materials, you don’t need an ID card or have forms to complete. on myHilltop.

Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA)

The FSA Plan allows employees to use pre-tax dollars to pay for may benefit- related expenses. Two tax-free accounts are available:

  • Health Care Flexible Spending Account for medical expenses not covered by insurance.
  • Dependent Care Flexible Spending Account for eligible dependent care expenses.

Enrollment is for one tax year only and does not automatically renew. Employees are not eligible to participate in the Health Care Flexible Spending Account if enrolled in the Health Savings Account (HSA). on myHilltop.

Short Term Disability (STD) Insurance

The optional Short Term Disability insurance offers financial protection by paying a portion of the employee’s earnings when unable to work for a short time due to a covered non-work-related condition, illness or injury. Employees pay the cost of this voluntary coverage with after-tax dollars through payroll deductions. on myHilltop.

Long Term Disability (LTD) Insurance

The Long Term Disability Plan provides a source of income if the employee experiences a long-term illness or injury that prevents them from working. The university pays theentire premium for this coverage. on myHilltop.

Basic Life & Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D) Insurance

The university pays the full cost of Basic Life and AD&D insurance. Life insurance pays benefits if the employee dies from most causes and AD&D benefits if the death is accidental or the employee is severely injured due to an accident and suffer a loss specified in the policy. Optional coverage for a spouse or dependent child is available, cost depends on the amount of coverage selected and age. on myHilltop.

Accident Insurance

The optional Accident Insurance pays a set benefit amount based on the type of injury and the type of treatment needed. Optional coverage available for spouse and dependents. on myHilltop.

Critical Illness Insurance

The optional Critical Illness Insurance plan pays a lump-sum benefit if a a covered member is diagnosed with a covered illness or condition. Optional coverage for a spouse or dependent child is available, cost depends on the amount of coverage selected and age. on myHilltop.

Pet Insurance

Optional Pet Insurance through Nationwide offers discounted rates on plans. Employees who elect to enroll in Pet Insurance will pay Nationwide directly for this benefit. Premiums will not be payroll deductions. For more information: petinsurance.com/stedwards on on .

Retiree Medical Insurance

Eligible retirees and their dependents may continue medical coverage by participating in the St. Edward’s retiree group medical plan. This election is made at the time of retirement. For more information refer to the .

Saving money for retirement is important for ensuring a comfortable future. St. Ed's offers two separate 403(b)  retirement plans through TIAA. You have the option to save on a pre-tax basis or an after-tax basis through payroll contributions. 

The Supplemental Retirement Plan is open to all employees, regardless of benefits eligibility status. There is no university contribution to this plan.

The Regular Retirement plan is only available to benefits-eligible employees, 21 years of age or older. Following the completion of one year of benefits-eligible employment, employees are automatically enrolled in the Regular Plan unless they opt out of the plan. Participants contribute 5% of their salary on either a pre-tax or after-tax basis and the university contributes 7%.  Enrollment occurs on the first day of the month coinciding with or following the one-year anniversary date. Benefits-eligible employees with less than one year of regular service who were most recently employed by an institution of higher education may be eligible for prior service credit in order to meet the one-year benefits eligibility criteria for enrollment into the Regular Retirement Plan. on myHilltop.

Tuition Remission and Tuition Exchange

Eligible employees may employees may take traditional undergraduate and graduate courses at St. 17³Ô¹ÏÍø at no cost and their spouses an dependent children may qualify for a partial or full tuition reduction through the Tuition Remission program. Tuition Exchange is a reciprocal scholarship opportunity for the dependents of eligible faculty and staff at all Tuition Exchange member schools. Refer to the for more information or myHilltop.

Paid Holidays

Regular employees are eligible for 10 paid holidays per year, plus the break between Christmas Eve and New Year’s Day. Refer to the .

Annual Leave

Regular full-time staff and 12-month faculty accrue annual leave of 80 hours per year up to 160 hours per year depending on length of service. Refer to the .

Sick Leave

Regular full-time staff and 12-month faculty accrue 96 hours of sick leave per year. Less than 12-month faculty accrue 80 hours up to 176 hours per year depending on length of service. Staff employees are eligible for the Staff Sick Leave Pool. Staff and faculty are eligible for Parental Leave. Refer to the .

Recreation and Wellness Center

Free access to a contemporary and inclusive fitness center is available for all SEU staff and faculty. Featuring modern workout stations and state of the art equipment to support your holistic well-being goals. Nationally certified instructor-led Group X fitness classes and personal training opportunities are available during the academic year for all fitness levels.
